Skin Care – How to get rid of dark spots for POC

This has to be the Number 1 Skin Care question for ‘melanated’ people. How to remove dark spots and hyperpigmentation to get an even tone complexion.

Hyperpigmentation is basically a fancy way of referring to darker skin patches caused by excess melanin deposits.

Dark spots naturally fade however it could take from 2 weeks to 24 months for a spot to completely clear up.

There are active ingredients to look out for that can speed up the fading process and brighten without losing your natural complexion.

Note: Be careful of brightening products. Getting an even skin tone is not the same as skin bleaching.

Active Ingredients To Look Out For Treating Dark Spots

Sunscreen

If there’s only one product you need to clear up dark spots or you’re on a tight budget, Get SUNSCREEN!

The main cause of hyperpigmentation is sun damage from excessive sun exposure.

Even though, melanin protects the skin from UV radiation, continuous exposure to sun rays can lead to skin darkening and damage.

It is recommended to use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or above, however the major qualm with high SPF is the WHITE CAST.

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

These are a group of plant or animal derived acids present in bunch of skin care mainly exfoliating and skin brightening products.

AHA’s do quite a number of positive things for the skin;

  • Exfoliation – Removal of dead skin cell build up
  • Skin brightening – Removal of dark spots
  • Improves Skin Texture
  • Promotes collagen growth
  • Fight acne causing bacteria

AHA’s that specifically aid skin brightening are citric acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid.

Make sure to not mix your acids and incorporate one at a time into your skin care routine.

Make sure to also clarify with your dermatologist or health care provider before using a new product.

Citric Acid

Citric Acid can be found naturally in fruits like oranges, lemons, grapes and more.

It has a lot of benefits like brightening, exfoliating, protecting the skin from sun exposure and removing dark spots.
