What is a Vision Board?

A vision board is a visual snapshot or collage of your goals, aspirations and affirmations designed to constantly motivate you.

They are definitely not new but over the past few years, they have certainly gained traction and become more mainstream.

Especially with the ease of creating them online and sharing on social media sites like Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

So how exactly does it work?

There is a science and method to all this fluff, believe it or not.

There is a power in visualization and a special effectiveness in writing things down.

People who very vividly describe or picture their goals are between 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals than people who don’t.” Mark Murphy for Forbes.com.

How vision boards work can be linked to a neuroscience term called the ‘Generation Effect

Which simply means you are more likely to remember something you produced or generated than materials you have read.

So, the process of writing your goals down, associating pictures to them, sticking those pictures together and constantly looking at the vision board regenerates the mental picture so many times and drives the goal severely into your mind and sub-conscious which majorly influence your decisions.

Simply put, your thoughts are driven to become reality.

How to Create a Vision Board in 6 steps

1. Think about what you would like to change

Before you even start writing down New Year Resolutions or Goals you would want to achieve for the New Year.

You should first do a self assessment and identify the different areas of your life you would want to make better and improve.

Goals can be extremely one dimensional in terms of numbers or set targets however identifying areas for improvement in personal health, relationships, spirituality, individuality, career etc. give a more comprehensive and holistic vision board.

So if it’s personal health goals; it can translate to eating right and exercising or even limiting screen time.

Likewise for career goals, it could be pinned on your board as getting your dream job, a promotion, higher pay, or pursuing additional income streams.

2. Write down the tangible goals and resolutions

From the areas you have selected from the first step, now it’s time to write them down in a list.

What you put down are concise targets and doable action plans for you to execute against those areas.

You can set it up this way. Bear in mind this is merely a suggestion. You are allowed to tweak it or do what works best for you.

Health

  • Drink lemon infused water every morning.
  • Work out four times a week.
  • Try and stick to 4-5 hours screen time on my phone.
  • Drink more green tea.
  • Go out for a walk/hike once a week.
  • Try and have home cooked meals 5/7 days in a week.

And then each area gets its respective bullet points to be achieved.

This step is the main difference between a vision and a mood or dream board.

You are putting down actions you intend to take to achieving your set goals before putting them in pictorial form.

A mood or dream board mostly serves an aesthetic purpose for what you would want.

3. Find pictures that reflect your Resolutions or Goals list

This is the fun part!

Find pictures that align and accurately depict your goals and resolution list.

As most of us function in a digital space, instead of looking and cutting through magazines or brochures, why not look for the pictures online.

The recommended place to start is Pinterest.

Pinterest is a walking breathing library of vision board ideas and can be sorted through several categories.

Don’t be afraid to personalize and edit pictures you find to fit.

For example, if you would like to reach a certain amount of YouTube subscribers or video count views, you can download a snapshot of your channel or social blade account and edit your target numbers on Word, Photoshop or your preferred software.

It doesn’t have to be perfect but you can visualize your goals better.

After finding pictures, make them into a collage on your vision board.

4. Don’t forget to add motivational quotes and affirmation words

Adding in motivational words or quotes is also very important.

Seeing self affirmations everyday helps the mind to believe and kicks in the Law of attraction for the things you want.

Example words and affirmations to add to your vision board could be;

  • Light
  • Love
  • Joy
  • Laughter
  • Faith
  • Hard work
  • Peace
  • Favour
  • Success
  • Wisdom
  • Winner
  • Ease
  • Live purposefully
  • I can do everything I set my mind to
  • Rise above every challenge

It helps to say these quotes out loud.

5. Put your vision board where it is most visible

It wouldn’t be ideal to do all this work and chuck away the final result where you wouldn’t see it.

The benefit of creating an online vision board is that you can paste it wherever and in all forms.

It could be your phone or laptop background and could also be framed on your bedroom wall.

Put it up in places you look at frequently.

6. You are allowed to make updates

This step is one that I didn’t think about but was inspired reading an article by Brigitt Earley from The Oprah Magazine.

She suggests to think of the vision board as a living thing that changes, open to additions, reductions and modifications.

Things can change as much as you individually can change.

Your perception could change about your goals 3 months down the line.

Don’t be restricted to what you already put down, make the change and walk towards achieving that goal.

It was so fun writing this blog post and I am especially motivated for the new year.

I would more than love to see the vision boards you create from our template.
